Got Questions About Manual Driving?
Everything you need to know before starting your manual lessons. Can't find your answer? Get in touch and we'll help.
Manual driving requires you to control the clutch and change gears yourself, giving you more control over the car and qualifying you to drive both manual and automatic vehicles. Automatic cars handle gear changes for you, which some learners find quicker to pick up, but a manual licence covers both car types.
Most learners need around 30–45 hours of professional manual lessons, though this varies depending on prior experience and how often you practise. Clutch control usually takes a few lessons to click, after which progress tends to speed up.
It has a slightly steeper learning curve early on, mainly around clutch control and gear changes, but with a patient instructor most learners build muscle memory within the first few lessons. Once it clicks, it becomes second nature.
No, all lessons take place in our dual-controlled manual training cars, fully insured and maintained. You're welcome to practise in a family or friend's manual car between lessons, as long as they're a qualified supervising driver.
Yes, plenty of learners start in one and switch to the other. Keep in mind that hours built up in an automatic don't fully transfer to manual skills like clutch control, so switching partway through may mean a short adjustment period.
Completely normal, especially in your first couple of lessons. Our instructors break clutch control down into small, manageable steps and give you plenty of quiet space to practise the biting point before moving into traffic.
Yes, our intensive manual courses condense the same structured training into a shorter timeframe with more frequent sessions, ideal if you need to be test-ready in a few weeks rather than a few months.
Yes, you'll sit your practical test in one of our manual training cars, the same one you've learned in, so you're familiar with the clutch, biting point, and controls on the day.
Stalling on its own isn't an automatic fail. Examiners look at how safely and calmly you recover. We spend time in lessons practising calm stall recovery so it becomes routine rather than something to panic about on test day.
Prices vary by day of the week and whether you book individually or as a block, with block bookings working out cheaper per hour. Visit our Prices page for full up-to-date rates, or get in touch for a personalised quote.
